Willamette Valley is known for producing the best wines in the region and is home to hundreds of producers. With the number of vineyards increasing rapidly, it is worth knowing the top five, well-established vineyards in the area, as reported by Wine Enthusiast.
1. Zenith Vineyard
Zenith’s ecology is described as “pragmatic organic.” The vineyard produces high-quality products that are grown as organically as possible. Its principal clients include a number of prominent wineries, from Grochau to St. Innocent.
2. Momtazi Vineyard
With 260 acres of planted grapes, Momtazi produces earthy, dark-fruit wine, with roasted spicy flavors, which it sells to several prominent wine bars in the area. Momtazi believes that fertile soil and vines produce exquisite grapes, without the need for chemicals. The vineyard only practices holistic and biodynamic farming.
3. Shea Vineyard
Shea Vineyard boasts the highest U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Security Program ratings in terms of farming practices. The owner has experience in trading for Wall Street, and thus focuses on running the vineyard and winery as a business. With that philosophy comes a drive to produce the best grapes possible for the vintage, and an understanding that no two years will be the same.
4. Temperance Hill Vineyard
Temperance Hill Vineyard is certified organic, and its products are farmed according to the Oregon Tilth criteria. In addition the vineyard, is certified by the Food Alliance and as Salmon Safe. It emphasizes a natural approach in its viticulture practices.
5. Freedom Hill Vineyard
Located in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, Freedom Hill Vineyard upholds a farming philosophy that limits the use of pesticides. Owners did not have any experience when they first tried to grow grapes, but the vineyard eventually became one of the best producers of vintage wine over the decades.
